London Wine & Spirits International Grants Alexandria a Bronze Medal - May 2003

Hatten Wines is proud to announce its Alexandria semi-sweet Muscat has won a Bronze Medal at the London Wine & Spirits International Competition. The Competition was held in May 2003, during the London Wine Exhibition. Along with the launching of its wines in the U.K. under the wings of Bali Unkorked, sole distributor of Hatten Wines for the U.K. and Hefaco b.v. its European Distributor, the Balinese winery has seen Alexandria awarded one of the most prestigious International wine competition’s Medal.

A great moment for Bali.

The International Wine & Spirits competition has been held yearly since 1969 and is attended by the most commended houses in the Wine & Spirits industry. Renowned for its rigorous judging, the competition uses technical analysis and blind tasting methods to award points to the entrants. Each tasting category is judged by a panel of experts with particular knowledge in the area and style that is being tasted. On a 100-point scale, the wines are judged by their appearance (clarity & color), nose (typicity, intensity, cleanliness and maturity), palate (balance, intensity and length) and overall balance.

Entries are judged in categories and are divided into further groups by variety, region and vintage as necessary. Unlike some competitions, the International Wine & Spirits competition restricts the number of winners each year to one Gold, one Silver and one Bronze in each tasting category - thereby ensuring the quality and prestige of each winner.

The International Wine & Spirits competition was founded in 1969 and is the premier competition of its kind in the world. Its aim is to promote the quality and excellence of the world’s best wines, spirits and liqueurs. This standard is achieved through a rigorous two-stage judging process of professional blind tasting and detailed technical (chemical and microbiological) analysis that takes place at The Competition’s headquarters in Surrey, UK. To ensure perfect conditions, the premises include temperature-controlled cellars, a fully equipped independent laboratory for technical analysis, and two dedicated tasting rooms. In 2003 The Competition received approximately 5,000 entries from over 50 countries.

Other winners

For the 2003 competition, Hatten Wines finds itself amongst some of the biggest names of the Industry, winners of Gold, Silver and Bronze medals: Penfolds, Houghton, Rosemount, Pepper Tree, Lindeman’s, Jacob’s Creek, Inniskilin, Beringer Blass, Ernest & Julio Gallo, GH Mumm & Cie, Barton & Guestier, and in the same category, Asti and Ice Wines from Canada and Germany.

Alexandria
A lovely white wine, Alexandria is made from the Belgia grapes grown in Hatten Wines’ own vineyards. The grapes, ripe and sugar-filled, are processed to bring the very fruity and perfumed grape flavour to its delightful taste. Sweet wines are always appreciated as some of the most complex and impressive flavours and aromas in the wine world. This medium-sweet white wine is very aromatic with grapey characters and lovely floral perfumes. The fruity palate is well balanced between sweetness and acid, leaving a refreshing aftertaste. Alexandria takes its name from the Muscat of Alexandria grape variety, a close cousin of the Belgia grapes.

Hatten Wines and this achievement
Being one of two wineries having achieved a medal win for its first application to this prestigious International Competition since its beginnings in 1969, Hatten Wines is extremely proud of its medal for Alexandria. Winemaker Vincent Desplat and Owner IB Rai Budarsa have not said their last word on the International scene. Having seen their Rosé achieve the stage of Finalist in a Portuguese Competition in May of this year (www.winemasters.pt) amongst Portuguese and Spanish Rosés, and now with this Bronze Medal in London, the pair have not only embarked on development of export markets but entries in other International competitions are to be expected in the future.
Export to Europe has started late 2002 and projects for other markets are on the way for 2003 and 2004.

The little kid from Bali, made it to the big leagues…
